The War Collection

[9 May 2010 | James Taylor | 1 Comment]

Call of Duty World at War
Many people within gaming don’t need another World War II game to add to their collection. However Activision seems to think that people do. In fact they have gone beyond that and decided that we need three. That’s right THREE! You have to wonder when they’ll get the picture.

If the recent listing on Amazon and GameStop is to be believed we are about to see the release of “Call of Duty: The War Collection”. Featuring all three of the World War II based games already available on 360 (Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 3 and World at War). Ok so the games aren’t brand new but clearly Activision is aiming to get those who have jumped onto the Modern Warfare band wagon to go and spend more money on past “Call of Duty” games, which no doubt will happen.

Well actually this sounds great to me, three good solid games and possibly a code for Call of Duty Classic for about $30 (it’s only listed in the U.S at the moment so I’ll stick with dollars). Well this is Activision so you can kiss that thought good bye. The collection is listed at $59.99. So full price, even though you can buy the games separately from GameStop for a combined price of $47.97. Oh yeah and you don’t get Call of Duty Classic either.

Now don’t get me wrong, this is business and if you have a product you sell it and sell it hard and I am all for that. However it’s nice to give your consumer a little bit of credit and occasionally value for money. This just seems like another one of Activision’s money grabbing schemes that is starting to get on the “Hardcore Gamers” and “Gaming Journalists” nerves.

If you want the collection then it is listed for a June 1st release. However my advice is get down to your local store and pick them up pre-owned for a lot less. Free advice, aren’t I kind.

The ‘call of duty: war collection’ in my opinion is Activision saying ‘we can’t make another world war two game because that topic is so old now, lets re-bring out the old call of duty games because they were awesome!’ – yes they were but thats not going to bring our war games any further is it? We want our war games to be more life threatening to the player and we want the excitment to build up, as if we ARE the soilders off to war and we ARE the soliders following orders that our officers and sargents. If you compare 2 of the latest war games, Modern warfare 2 and BFBC2 for example, now look at the grenade principle, what happens on MW2 when you throw a grenade into a room? Well.. the walls and ceilings inside aren’t falling to pieces, the only thing that happens is that the furniture inside jumps about and papers fly everywhere, what is the point in this? Right, now what happens when you throw a grenade into a room on BFBC2? Well.. walls collapse, ceilings cave in, barrels of gas explode, this is what we want to see… Do you you understand what i mean?

I don’t know exactly why they wouldn’t of put the classic call of duty game in the collection because like it says it was a classic to us and without it we wouldn’t have the war games we have today.

I personally can’t wait for the next call of duty game ‘Black Ops’. I hope that it takes that one step closer to what we all want to see, i hope its leaves the old graffics behind and takes the new, better graffics we know it can have, with this it will make it a more attractive game to others that would think that this game will be just like the old ones. Like all companies want to do, they want to target every group of people or every target market there is today.

Thankyou for reading this long reply to this war collection post, i enjoyed every second of writing it,
