Gaming Top 10 Moments 2011

So thats now 2011 behind us. And what a year it was. Whether you’re a fan of RPG’s, Shooters, Platformers or Racers, 2011 had it all. Starting out the year with the mighty Dead Space 2, the direct sequel to 2008s survival horror and closing up the year (well…the year worth talking about anyway) was The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, the next iteration in this now 25 year old franchise.
If you haven’t had time or you’re still on Mass Effect 2 prepping your army for march then you’ve missed …

Going Solo: Is Single Player Gaming Making a Comeback?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last month or so, you can’t have missed out on how popular The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has become. Developed by Bethesda, well known for their modern renditions of the Fallout franchise, Skyrim has taken the world of gaming by storm – selling more than 3.4 million copies in just the first two days, and gluing gamers all over the world to their lounge seats for days (or weeks) at a time. And the best thing about this runaway success is …

20 years of gaming – Table Top to Consoles

As a professional writer of tabletop role-playing games (the ‘pencil and paper’ kind), I’m well versed in selling to niche markets. Long have I wished that the love for tabletop RPGs (other than fantasy football…) would spread out into the general public. Instead, I’ve watched the market grow, then shrink, then grow, then shrink again, never really gaining any ground.

Of course, tabletop RPGs (TRPGs) really haven’t evolved in the last four decades. Sure, the genres have gone beyond simple fantasy war games, and new designers are always innovating rules, but …

Veteran, Insanity, Legendary: The “Cut Scene” Series

Disclaimer: “Cut Scene” is intended to be a series of short and intentionally provocative commentaries on the state of gaming.  Preconceived notions that the author is “full of sh*t” are likely to be confirmed in the associated text. Any language that results in the activation of a sleeper cell is purely coincidental.
Gamers are trendsetters. Why else would we have such bad reputations if it weren’t for our uncanny ability to generate stereotypes about ourselves.  There’s the pot smoking COD player, the stinky expo queuers, the stunningly handsome amateur podcasters, etc.  …

Dashboard: A Not So Serious Exploration of Gaming

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about your mum and the way the beads of sweat on her supple, mature body glisten with the glow of the neon sign from our cheap motel room. But I’ve also been thinking a lot about my gaming.  To this end, I thought I might help you burn a few minutes (while you’re at work) to explore our gaming time and choices a bit.  I promise you’ll be asking yourself all sorts of questions by the end of the page. (Like, does cheese smell …

Williams Pinball Classics – Review

Relics. That is what pinball tables are these days. Testament to a by-gone age in the 1970s and 1980s where pinball was king and gaming, in part was a spectator sport. Unfortunately the video game boom of the 1980s began to signal the end for pinball machines as Pac Man, Space Invaders and Asteroids took over. Suddenly the easy to upkeep and profitable arcade cabinet look like a better investment than the more expensive to repair (if even a single part went wrong), pinball machine.
Now we’ve come full circle. A …
